While artificial turf fields are becoming more common, Rugby is most commonly played on natural grass fields. As a result, there can be a high degree of variability with field conditions depending on the weather, region, or general maintenance of the pitch. Hard in the summer and soft and wet in the winter and early spring. No matter the weather or field conditions, though, many positions in rugby still require significant traction to play especially in the pack.
This is where soft rugby boots come into play. These variants are built with longer studs that are usually made of metal, allowing them to penetrate the ground much deeper than a firm ground moulded stud which provides much better grip. Soft ground boots typically have either six or eight long studs designed for maxim traction and ability to pierce deeply into the turf. All positions can benefit from these in bad weather or on muddy fields, but they are essential for pack players to do their jobs come scrum and maul time.
Because of the extra hold they have on the surface, these ensure that players are much safer, without sacrificing their speed, traction, and overall quality of performance.
