The History of Umbro & Rugby

History of Umbro

Umbro has pioneered sports tailoring since its founding in 1924.  With innovative kit designs, Umbro has been a forerunner in high performance apparel since its creation nearly a hundred years ago.  With its pride in high quality and excellence at everything they do, Umbro refuses to provide teams with technical products that do not meet the elite standards of the sport.

Two Men who founded Umbro

1920s -  Brothers Harold and Wallace Humphreys form Humphreys Brothers, which in 1924 is abbreviated to "Umbro", a combination of the two words.

1930s  Already in the early 30s, Umbro offers a wide selection of Rugby products - jerseys, ruggernicks (shorts) and "hosiery" (socks) for men and youth are offered in many colors and different designs.

1966  By this time, 85% of all British Soccer clubs wear Umbro.

During the 1966 World Cup, 15 out of 16 teams wear Umbro, including England, the winning team.

This same year, Umbro dresses the British & Irish Lions on their tour of Australia.

1971  The British & Irish Lions Rugby team, wearing Umbro, defeat the All Blacks to win a Test series in New Zealand.  They are the first and only side to do so in New Zealand.  The team donned extra strong Umbro Dragon jerseys, Hooka shorts and tracksuits.

2020  Umbro announces a partnership with Bristol Bears and a four-year partnership with England Rugby.   England’s Men’s teams, Red Roses, and Sevens will soon don the iconic double diamond on the pitch.

In addition to match day kit, Umbro provides training wear and off-field kit as well as a full range of supporter wear for men, women and children.
